For a long time many believe that communism is an evil form of government that must be permanently ended worldwide. The following are some reasons for supporting this viewpoint.
Communism
1 – greatly devalues human life – often it is extremely oppressive to its citizens, perpetrating great atrocities and human rights violations against them
2 – does not allow for a robust economy thus the vast majority live below middle class standards
3 – does not allow for personal or social expression or development thus citizens can not advance or be creative – no freedom of the press, no artistic, scientific, or technological creativity or progress
4 – greatly devalues private property ownership – does not allow citizens to own private property
5 – greatly devalues justice and the rule of law – does not allow fairness/justice or freedom/liberty for its citizens – thus citizens do not have basic civil or criminal constitutional rights like the right to an attorney or free speech
6 – fosters great political repression in many ways
7 – consolidates great power in the hands of a few democratically unelected officials who often have an immoral/unethical if not totally evil agenda
8 – permanently places the interest of the state ahead of its citizens – government is not accountable to its citizens
In light of these extremely negative characteristics it boggles the mind as to why anyone would support such a governing system. History repeatedly teaches us such regimes always fail and eventually die out leaving the country in turmoil and in very bad condition.

Food for thought. For the sake of discussion, would you say that the countries you identified as currently “communist” truly espouse that system, or use it as a cover for more totalitarian or oligarchic forms of government? Also, are there any positive qualities of communism, and if so, is it feasible to incorporate them into other forms of government?

Of the 5 remaining communist countries (China, Laos, Cuba, North Korea, & Vietnam), I would say only China is the most Non-communist because of its capitalist economy and strong trade relationships with many other nations. These are just two of many hallmarks of capitalism not communism.
Regarding the other 4 nations, I think at times the leaders do engage in abusive totalitarian behavior and use communism as a cover for more evil agendas and behavior. You make a great point.
The leaders of these nations do not fully understand the benefits of democracy and capitalism and do not want to transition to these because they will lose power, control, and wealth. Moreover, these leaders fear they will be jailed or put to death for crimes against humanity or human rights violations. Also, I think it is possible they are being coerced by other larger, stronger nations to remain as they are – to be in a more subordinate relationship.
As for any positive qualities – I do not know of any.
